A2 STEAM Expo night! Students prepared the room and shared their City Planning PBL project with the community. Our display included student's writings, digital and hand-drawn maps, Animoto videos, poster boards, and an actual city built by the students. They named their city Childrensville. The evening was full of excitement and the students were very proud of all their hard work!
Students used their knowledge about residential, industrial, commercial, school, recreational, health, and safety zones to create their city- Childrensville. Using recycled materials students created houses, stores, skate parks, swimming pools, restaurants, hospitals, schools, factories, and more.
Mr. Van Loo gave our class a special treat! He explained and showed the students how 3D printing works. He printed a 3D A2 STEAM logo which we used in the city students created for our PBL project. To better understand how to plan a city students were introduced to aerial view maps. We explored how to view a city in aerial view and then created our own. Students were able to create individual maps using colored pencils and a template as well as digital maps. They also worked collaboratively to create an aerial view map of a city they planned in small groups.
Students created drafts and published informative/explanatory writing pieces. As part of our PBL project students wrote about the different types of buildings that make up a city. Each student also created a digital piece using Animoto. Here is an example.
In small groups students researched the different zones of a city. Each group was responsible for telling the class what types of buildings are in their zone. Students used newspaper clippings and pictures from magazines to create a visual to explain their findings. Students participated in a health fair given by Huron High School students. At the health fair students learned about germs and how to stay healthy; the importance of NOT smoking and the affects smoking has on your lungs, what a defibrillator is and how to use it; and they each were able to get their blood pressure and temperature taken. The high school students did an awesome job and the kindergarten students learned a lot! As part of our social studies unit students have been learning about where they are in the world. We first discussed and explored our neighborhoods. Then we talked about how our neighborhoods are a part of a city. This sparked our PBL project. As a class we decided to learn more about what is a city and how to plan a city. Students explored Google Earth on their iPads to get a better look at not only their city but other cities in Michigan. We had a visit from the City of Ann Arbor City Planner Matt Kowalski. He talked about his job as a city planner and what buildings (zones) make up a city. We learned that one of the major tools he uses at his job are maps.
